Just a quick reminder that we are meeting tomorrow at the 2625 N. King Street building for strategic planning with Allie Stender. The theme for the potluck is heart healthy or red food. Theresa is bringing a chocolate fountain, so you could bring something to dip if you want or salad things. I am bringing spaghetti sauce and noodles.
Also, remember we'll also be holding a drawing for 2 Harkins movie tickets to those who subscribe or have already subscribed to our FlagCHAN MODSite (members only discussion site) by today, January 31st. To join, please email MJ at mjbutler@coconino.az.gov for an invitation.
Please note the MODSite is not the public blog (this). More info can be found at this link.

Participate in Celebrate Youth Day!
Dear Celebrate Youth Day Participant,
Another year is rapidly coming to a close and it is time for us to begin planning for Celebrate Youth Day (CYD) 2012.
We are planning for the stage (we will set up the stage only if we have enough interest) and action area to be in separate areas again this year. This will allow for more performances and demonstrations. To better serve the community, we want to include as many exhibitors as possible. As in years past, we may have to limit tables and accept participants on a first come, first serve basis. Please request what you think you will need and we will do our best to accommodate every request.
We want this to be the best CYD ever, but we will need your cooperation, patience, and understanding to accomplish this goal. Please call Connie at 779-5361 if you have any questions.
Schools are encouraged to participate by providing performances or a table with information and or an activity for kids.
Celebrate Youth Day is sponsored by Citizens Against Substance Abuse (CASA), the Coconino County Alliance Against Drugs (CCAAD), and the Flagstaff Mall.
Thank you and I look forward to seeing you and your organization at CYD 2012 on January 28, 2012
Sincerely,
Connie S. Leto

Upcoming Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Class: Tuesday, January 17th
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a course designed to help students cultivate their own mindfulness practice.
Mindfulness is a way of waking up to your life, of learning to relate directly to whatever is happening in your life. It is a way of doing something for yourself that only you can do—consciously working with your own stress, pain, illness, and the challenges of daily life.
By enrolling in MBSR, you will learn the following:
• Practical methods for focusing your attention
• Coping skills to improve your ability to handle stressful situations
• To increase awareness of the interconnectedness of mind and body in health and illness
• Gentle body-focused conditioning exercises to strengthen and release muscle tension
• To cultivate greater balance in your life
The class schedule consists of 8 weekly classes of 2 hours each and one 5 hour day of mindfulness. There are over 20 total hours of instruction.
This course is modeled on MBSR developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. This program has been taught for over 30 years and research indicates efficacy in an array of areas of both physical and mental distress.
Nicolette Sachs, course instructor, has taught Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction to nearly 150 students during the past 9 years. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Nicolette has sustained a private practice in Flagstaff for 16 years.
There will be a free orientation session held on Tuesday, January 17th, 2012, from 9:30-11:00am. The full course begins on Tuesday, January 24th, from 9:30-11:30am. The course will go for 8 consecutive weeks.
The Day of Mindfulness is scheduled for Saturday, March 3rd. The cost for the 8 weekly classes, including the mindfulness all day, and course materials is $250.00.
The course location is: Academy of the Martial Way, 2708 N. 4th St., Suite E-1, Flagstaff (located in the Knoles Village Center off 4th Street).
Please contact Nicolette at (928) 526-1961 x4 or nssachs@gmail.com with any questions and to reserve your place in this MBSR class.

Free Webinar: New Wave of Drugs-Heroin & Synthetic Drugs
What is Spice, K2, Salts? We are being told by our relatives and training clients that many Native youth see synthetic drugs as an easy and safe way to get high. Synthetic drugs can actually be very dangerous, recognizing the chemical compounds can have unpredictable effects. The packets are usually labeled "Not for human consumption," and no words could be more true.
Join us Wednesday, February 1st from 10-11 AM MST for this engaging, tuition-free webinar to examine the ongoing trend of synthetic drug abuse and the return of heroin abuse. This webinar will offer prevention resources to help service professionals, parents, and communities respond today.
Featured Presenters include:
Walter Lamar (Wichita/Blackfeet), President and CEO of Lamar Associates
Steven Juneau (Haida/Blackfeet), Vice-President and Director of Training for Indian Country Training.
Classification: UNCLASSIFIED
