Flagstaff Foodlink & Killip Elementary School

Hello Hermosa Vida partners,

Please consider supporting Flagstaff Foodlink & Killip Elementary School on March 20th with a donation. All proceeds will go towards the installation of an irrigation system for the Killip Elementary School garden.

Thank you,

Killip Elementary School, located in the middle of Flagstaff's Sunnyside Neighborhood, has a beautiful community school garden. This garden provides outdoor educational activities for students and much need produce for their families. It is especially important because many of these families do not have access to fresh and healthy foods on a regular basis, if at all.
At present, gardeners spend 3 hours per day watering the garden during the dry season -- time that students and their families could be spending together.
Flagstaff Foodlink, in collaboration with our local partners*, hopes to install an irrigation system at the school this Spring. We have already raised $500, but we need to raise an additional $2,500. Then Foodlink's Water Our Garden Project at Killip Elementary School will be fully funded!!
We need your support on March 20th!!!
Flagstaff Foodlink is participating in AZ Gives Online Fundraiser on March 20th.
Please go online that day to make a donation!!

Tell the Senate: America Depends on Our Nutrition Programs

Wednesday the Senate Budget Committee is set to consider proposals that would slash billions from our country’s nutrition programs—reducing funding that provides SNAP (food stamps) to over 47 million Americans, and completely eliminating the nutrition education program SNAP-Ed. As budget conversations continue over the next few days, a proposal on the table from Senator Roberts, to slash $36 billion, is expected to be the first of many misdirected attempts to balance the budget by literally taking healthy foods off of people's plates. The proposed cuts could go even higher, if we don't stand up for nutrition programs today.

On the heels of last week’s devastating sequester cuts, we can’t afford to sever one of the most important safety nets for our poorest families. Cutting nutrition programs won’t reduce poverty, stop children from going hungry or provide resources that improve diets.

Please make a call today to the Senate Budget Committee and tell them to protect SNAP and SNAP-Ed from any cuts in Senator Roberts' proposal, and in any future negotiations.

Top FREE Wellness Apps for iPhone and Android

Fooducate  This app made the top of our list for a multitude of reasons. For starters, it allows
you to scan a product barcode to see product highlights, both good and bad. From there you can
select better alternatives by comparing the nutrition information Fooducate analyzes and makes
available to you including whether a product has excessive sugar, trans fat, additives and
preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, food colorings, and confusing serving sizes. F ooducate
app was developed by dietitians and concerned parents and has no influence from food
manufacturers, supplement companies, specific diets, or any other agency. Other features
include a barcode scanner, over 160,000 products analyzed, analyzes both nutrition labels and
ingredients list.

more than a simple calorie counter. It has the single largest food database of any Android app

track of your progress in both areas. For food specifically, it calculates calories and all the major

foods you’ve eaten for easy access. Other features include barcode scanner and recipe
calculator.

healthier options in a pinch. Users can look up nutrition information from over 100 popular

food items, calories, and other nutritional information. Some reviews mention outdated menus

better options` even at fast food restaurants, it does the job. Other features include hiding menu
items with selected food allergies and a restaurant locator.
