Dear Parents or
Caretakers,
The Phoenix Indian Center is seeking parents in the
Flagstaff area to participate in its Urban American Indian Parenting (UAIP)
Project. Your participation will help us provide a needed service to the Urban
American Indian community. Eligible parents will receive up to $150.00 for
participating.
Workshops for the UAIP Project will be available starting Tuesday, January 22, 2013 on Tuesday
evenings from 6 pm-8 pm at Kinsey
Elementary School, 1061 S. Lonetree Road, Flagstaff, AZ 86001.
The Phoenix Indian Center is currently working with the
Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center at Arizona State University to
conduct the Urban American Indian Parenting Project (funded by the National
Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, National Institute of
Health) involving a newly developed culturally grounded parenting intervention
curriculum. Over the last two years the Phoenix Indian Center has worked with
urban Native American parents to develop the curriculum.
The objectives for the UAIP project are to (1) to create and
test a culturally grounded parenting intervention for urban
American Indian families, to help prevent children from engaging in substance
abuse use and risky sexual behaviors, (2) to compare the culturally adapted
parenting intervention with a control condition in a randomized control trial
to determine the effectiveness of the intervention, and (3) build institutional
capacity for sustaining the development and delivery of this project and
similarly designed culturally grounded prevention interventions.
Parents will be randomly chosen to attend one of the two
curriculums:
