Rethink Your Drink Campaign

Dear HEC Partners and Friends,

As the temperature continues to rise, the Health Education Council wants to ask you to Rethink Your Drink and quench thirst with refreshing cold water instead of sugary drinks.  This summer, HEC is launching a Rethink Your Drink Pledge campaign with a goal of getting 10,000 pledges to commit to better health by eliminating consumption of sugary drinks.  Sugary drinks are the single largest contributor to added sugars in our diets, accounting for 22 percent of the empty calories consumed by children and teens.  Pledge partners will receive healthy drink recipes, an online sugary beverage calculator to help you identify how much sugar is consumed in drinks, and tips for staying hydrated throughout this 30-day pledge. TAKE THE PLEDGE to Rethink Your Drink and be entered to win a $250 AMEX gift card at www.rethinkyourdrinkpledge.com.

We are also inviting you to support the Rethink Your Drink campaign by helping us spread the word  What you can do to help promote the Campaign?  Here are someways:
   * I will take the Rethink Your Drink online pledge.
   * I will promote the Rethink Your Drink online pledge on my Facebook page (just copy & paste hyperlink above).
   * I will share the RYD pledge link with my colleagues, family, and friends.
   * I will speak with my business/school/organization about placing the RYD pledge link on my organization’s website.
   * I will talk with my company’s employee wellness representative about the campaign and promote the pledge campaign in my workplace.
   * I will promote the RYD online pledge in my business/school/organization’s newsletter or e-blast (sample paragraph provided above).

Beans and Rice -A Benefit for the Poore Free Medical Clinic

Beans and Rice
A Benefit for the Poore Free Medical Clinic
AUGUST 12 TH FROM 6 TO9PM
   At the ORPHEUM THEATER
The little mountain town of Flagstaff erupts in an evening of music story and song as they celebrate the Poore Free Medical Clinic and remember how a community cares for it’s own. Dr. Henry Poore and his wife Nina  are the hosts and Tony Norris is your Em Cee. Look for exciting musical performances and stories and support the clinic that supports you.

This evening of entertainment is for the benefit of the Poore Medical Clinic. And like everyone else who helps the free clinic the professional performers are  volunteer. We are Flagstaff’s new free medical clinic.  Founded by Dr. Henry and Nina Poore who serve as Medical Director and volunteer coordinator, the Clinic is all volunteer, and 100% free. You can’t have insurance coverage or make more than 200% of the federal poverty level, and also must a resident of Coconino County, to be served. In our first eight months we’ve seen over 1000 patients and provided nearly $400,000 worth of services. Because we pay no rent and are all volunteers our expenses for the same period were less than $40,000. That means your purchase of a $10 ticket will provide a $100.00 worth of medical services for someone who really needs them.

   TICKETS ARE ONLY $10.00
and can be purchased at the following locations:

FREE Family event - sponsored by NACA MSPI program

Sports Physicals & Fitness Health Fair

WHAT: Healthcare providers representing 10 different Flagstaff organizations will be conducting Sports Physicals for athletes required to fulfill an annual pre-participation physical evaluation for the 2012 – 2013 school year. There is a $10 charge for each physical. All proceeds will be donated to community athletic organizations.

While athletes (and their parents) wait for their physical they will be able to partake in the “Infotainment” at our Fitness Health Fair. This information will be offered in conjunction with physicals to increase health awareness through materials, demonstrations and education to young athletes and parents. Activities at the fitness health fair will include:

Concussion Care Information and Baseline Testing Sign-up. The Concussion Care Program focuses on educating parents, coaches and athletes of the importance of seeking care when a concussion is suspected. It is recommended that all athletes in a high impact sport complete a baseline test that can be used to compare post-injury test results to if the athlete experiences a concussion. It is recommended that the athletes in the following sports receive ImPACT baseline testing: Football, Cheer, Rugby, Soccer, Hockey and Wrestling. Parents and athletes can visit the Concussion Care Booth at the Fitness Health Fair to sign up for baseline testing on Saturday, August 4, 2012.

Vaccination Counseling. We can check immunizations on the state data base, update your immunization care, provide information on childhood and adolescent immunizations and assist you with scheduling vaccination appointments if needed. (Bring your Immunization Card)
