URGENT ACTION NEEDED - Protect the Work of Charities in Any Fiscal Cliff Deal

Now on the verge of reaching a deal on avoiding the "fiscal cliff," the President and House Speaker reportedly have agreed to impose new limits to the charitable giving incentive as part of their package. Unless they receive a huge groundswell of opposition immediately, the ability of charitable nonprofits - everything from churches and synagogues to local food banks, cultural groups, Girl Scouts, and United Ways - to raise the funds they need to serve others may be sharply curbed for many years to come.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO:
Call the White House right now (202-456-1111) and give the operator this message for the President:

The President's limit on charitable deductions hurts front line nonprofits serving people in need. Don't hurt the helpers. Don't limit charitable deductions!

Give your name, City and State, and tell what the charitable deduction means to the work you do or the services you rely on.

THE NEXT MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO:
Forward this message to everyone you know who cares about the work of your nonprofit, the services you provide, and the people you serve.

That means forward this email to all of your employees/co-workers, board members, volunteers, clients, people served, and colleagues with other nonprofits in your community.

The White House Comment Line operates from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EASTERN. Call now and forward this message.

Decision time for Strong Soot Standards

Decision time for Strong Soot Standards

The decision on new soot health standards is due tomorrow. We need your voice today to let President Obama know how much these standards matter for public health. This is your last chance to tell President Obama to support strong soot standards.<http://action.lung.org/site/R?i=3Ca2hDAk-u21shRclZwvDw>

Independent scientists tell us that we need much stronger standards, but polluters want to be able to continue fouling the air we breathe.

Ask President Obama to set new standards to protect you and your family.<http://action.lung.org/site/R?i=hpnnWyR8zfWxTeOyElPDxg>

Thousands of studies show that soot from diesel engines, power plants and factories worsen the health of those with lung and heart disease, trigger asthma attacks and can even kill. Our children and our communities must be protected from this deadly pollutant.

Tell President Obama: put public health over the polluters wishes.<http://action.lung.org/site/R?i=d2UUe0i0Kvfy80X3Oiy32Q>

Big polluters are working to block EPA's lifesaving clean air protections.

Take action and tell President Obama it's time for less soot. <http://action.lung.org/site/R?i=nzS06mDSEoUVfnKHecpKeA>

$182.5 Billion Alcohol Tax Proposed to President Obama

<http://action.alcoholjustice.org/link/target/mi/iF6q3Fcr.aspx>[https://d3dkdvqff0zqx.cloudfront.net/groups/mi/images/c_budget_capitol.jpg]<http://action.alcoholjustice.org/link/target/mi/iF6q3Fcr.aspx><http://action.alcoholjustice.org/link/target/mi/iF6q3Fcr.aspx>Tell Congressional leaders, President Barack Obama, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner that an alcohol excise tax increase of $182.5 billion over ten years is a major step back from the edge of the fiscal cliff.<http://action.alcoholjustice.org/link/target/mi/iF6q3Fcr.aspx>

Did you know that since 1991 Big Alcohol lobbying has resulted in our country losing $57 billion in revenue? Or that a new alcohol tax increase could help fill nearly 12% of the President's revenue portion of the nation's ten-year deficit reduction goal?

It's all true and it's time to tell our national leaders to hold Big Alcohol accountable and get them to pay their fair share while helping to reduce the deficit. The catastrophe of alcohol-related harm will be reversed with a 10 cent spirits tax increase, 15 cents on beer and 18 cents on wine.

<http://action.alcoholjustice.org/link/target/mi/iF6q3Fcr.aspx>[https://d3dkdvqff0zqx.cloudfront.net/groups/mi/images/dime-a-drink.jpg]<http://action.alcoholjustice.org/link/target/mi/iF6q3Fcr.aspx>Alcohol consumption annually costs American society 79,000 lives and $223.5 billion in harm of which government's share is $94.2 billion.<http://action.alcoholjustice.org/link/target/mi/iF6q3Fcr.aspx>

Alcohol is unlike other products because consuming it causes great harm to the general public and great costs to government. Alcohol Justice believes that $182.5 billion in new alcohol tax revenue over ten years is a fair contribution to deficit reduction that will help the country avoid health and safety spending cutbacks.

Tell our federal officials now that alcohol taxes should be increased to reimburse government for some of the cost of alcohol-related health and public safety services.<http://action.alcoholjustice.org/link/target/mi/iF6q3Fcr.aspx>

Save the Date: Healthy Air Call-in Day is Tuesday, December 4th

Next Tuesday, December 4th, 2012, we need your voice in support of healthy air.

Please plan to take 5 minutes to call the White House and let President Obama know you want strong soot standards.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has until December 14th to update health standards for soot in our air. You and thousands of other healthy air advocates sent a strong message to EPA this summer that they must set the strictest safeguards on soot pollution.

Now President Obama needs to hear from you that you support strong soot standards.<http://action.lung.org/site/R?i=-R4q3-89wigN62ZGLYbtdg>

Big Polluters want the President to block EPA's proposal because they want to keep polluting our air. They don't want you and your neighbors to know just how dangerous current levels of soot are.

Learn more about the soot standards and why President Obama needs to set the strongest standards.<http://action.lung.org/site/R?i=3HdlaiDyGfhZV2JLIIA-CQ>

In order to maximize the impact of these calls to the President, please wait to make your calls until Tuesday, December 4th, when you receive the talking points in your e-mail. Also, please ask your family and friends to participate in the Healthy Air Call-In Day as well.

Big polluters are working to block EPA's lifesaving clean air protections.

Join us next Tuesday, December 4th, and tell President Obama it's time for less soot.

Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

CPR Training Benefits Everyone

CPR Training Benefits Everyone

Nurse Alice Benjamin is a fellow You’re the Cure advocate for CPR training. She’d like to tell you why training more people in CPR is important to the heart health of everyone.

At work I see CPR save lives every day. But even before I became a nurse I realized that if I learned to administer CPR then I would be able to save a person’s life – whether my mother, neighbor or someone that I may encounter as I go about my day – if they went in to cardiac arrest.
Do you know the percentage of people in this country that survive a sudden cardiac arrest that occurs out of the hospital? In other words, if a person goes down in their workplace, on the street or in their home—what are their odds of surviving? Sadly, it is just under 8%. A huge part of what determines if they live or die is whether they receive bystander CPR - someone around, a stranger or a loved one, who is willing to begin CPR until emergency technicians arrive on the scene.
Urge your legislator to prepare more people to save a life by supporting legislation to train students in CPR. The more people trained in CPR in every community, the more likely someone will be prepared to step in and save a life.

You don’t have to be Nurse Alice to be a lifesaver. Many people feel helpless during cardiac emergencies due to insecurities about their CPR skills, but anyone can save a life, including you. In less than two minutes you can learn
Hands-Only CPR.

From one advocate to another,

Whitney Chamberlain

Video about Soda (parental warning)

THE UNHAPPY TRUTH ABOUT SODA

It wasn't so bad when soft drinks were the occasional treat.
But now sugary drinks are the number one source of calories in the American diet.
With one third of America overweight and another third obese, it's a wonder
anyone is still swallowing what the soda companies are selling.

Note for parents: Beginning at about 1:20 there is a bedroom scene that might not be suitable for young viewers, and at about 2:09 a chainsaw makes an appearance that might be upsetting to very young viewers. This film is not yet rated (nor will it be) but I’d say it’s about a PG-13.

REMINDER! Bust My Assets Membership Campaign - E.D. runs half marathon for CCC&Y memberships

Greetings CCC&Y Friends and Partners!
Thanks to all those who have contributed to the Bust My Assets Membership Campaign! I have raised $350 in support of CCC&Y action and activities. Please take a moment today to help me get closer to my fundraising goal of $1,500.
This is a friendly reminder that I will be running my first half marathon in the 8th Annual Sedona Marathon on February 2, 2013. To help motivate and inspire me during the next few months of training and during the actual race, totaling 13.1 miles, I will be raising money for the Coconino Coalition for Children and Youth (CCC&Y) Bust My Assets Membership Campaign. CCC&Y membership dues are used to spread awareness on Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets through the purchase of Asset related educational materials and through the implementation of CCC&Y sponsored, Asset-focused events, trainings and activities.
Every lump sum pledge received, both large and small, will ensure CCC&Y’s active board, members and volunteers advocating for and on behalf of children and youth, can continue this important work, ultimately supporting and enriching the lives of young people throughout Coconino County.
This is my 3rd year as Executive Director, supporting CCC&Y’s mission of providing leadership in developing community wide strategies that enhance the well being of children and youth in Coconino County. I am passionate about this work and the progress we have made ensuring all children and youth have the resources, support and opportunities they need to reach their full potential.
You can make a secure, online, lump-sum donation today with PayPal by going to www.coconinokids.org PROJECTS page and clicking the Donate button. (or click here: http://coconinokids.org/index.php?/projects/)
You can also save us the PayPal fee by mailing a check made out to CCC&Y with Bust My Assets in the memo line.

All donations will be collected and used only after I have crossed the finish line on February 2nd. You will receive an acknowledgement of your donation to this cause as a tax write off. Individual donations of $25 or more and business or organization donations of $50 or more will earn one annual CCC&Y membership. Membership benefits include discounts on trainings and workshops, listings on our website, FaceBook page and in other promotional materials, and voting rights at the CCC&Y annual meeting in the month of May.
Any size donation will help get me closer to my fundraising goal of $1,500. If you are interested in learning more about CCC&Y, the 40 Developmental Assets or CCC&Y sponsored events and activities, visit www.coconinokids.org.
Thank you all so much for your support and for helping to Bust My Assets.
